We regret to inform you that Dr Smith and Dr Shorter are not currently accepting referrals for children with behavioural (also known as neurodevelopmental) issues such as Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

In the interim, or whilst waiting to see another paediatrician, we recommend speaking to your School Counsellor or making an appointment with a private Paediatric Psychologist to arrange initial assessments as needed. Most school-age children with behavioural, social, or academic issues will need various parent and teacher-completed questionnaires, formal academic and IQ assessments, and/or a period of counselling to addressed associated mood issues, so this is an excellent start. Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy visits may also be useful depending on your child’s specific needs. It will also mean you are better prepared for when you do see a paediatrician, and additional treatments can often be offered straight away, rather than waiting for these investigations to be completed. You may find the information in the link below useful in providing therapeutic options to consider whilst waiting for Paediatric review.
